Conversation Gambit

Dalam bahasa Indonesia, Conversation Gambit adalah Langkah Awal dalam Percakapan

The main way we make our conversation sound natural is by using gambits. A gambit is a word or a phrase which helps us to express what we are trying to say or remark intended to open a conversation. (Cara utama kita membuat percakapan kita terdengar alami adalah dengan menggunakan gambits. Sebuah gambit adalah sebuah kata atau sebuah ucapan yang membantu memperlihatkan apa yang sedang kita coba untuk katakan atau mengatakan yang dimaksudkan untuk membuka percakapan)

For example, we use a gambit to introduce a topic of a conversation, to link what we have to say to what someone has just said, to agree or disagree, to respond to what we have heard. In one sense, a gambit has a very little meaning–it does not express the opinion, it may only introduce the opinion. On the other hand, if we never use gambits in our conversation, other people will think we are very abrupt, direct, and even rude–they will get a wrong picture of us as people. (Misalnya, kita menggunakan sebuah gambit untuk memperkenalkan sebuah topik percakapan, untuk menghubungkan apa yang harus kita katakan untuk apa yang telah seseorang katakan, untuk setuju atau tak setuju, untuk menanggapi apa yang telah kita dengar. Di satu sisi, sebuah gambit memiliki arti yang sangat sedikit – itu tidak memperlihatkan opini, itu hanya boleh memperkenalkan opini. Di sisi yang lain, jika kita tak pernah menggunakan gambit dalam percakapan kita, orang – orang juga akan berpikir kita sangat mendadak, langsung dan bahkan kasar – mereka akan mendapatkan gambaran yang salah dari kita sebagai orang)

Mrs. Tina : Why don’t you take a rest at home? I’m afraid, it will be getting worst.
Rudi : Yes mom, I will go home.

d. Pride

Ranti : Mommy, mommy….
Rian : She’s in the kitchen.
Mother : I’m here, darling.
Ranti : Mom, you know what. My teacher told me that I am one of the students who get a scholarship from a national University in Bandung.
Mother : Oh really, that’s excellent. I’m very proud of you.
Ranti : Thanks Mom. I’m so happy.

e. Invitation

Robi : Hi, Sandra. There will be a great film tonight.
It’s about Nasreddin. Would you like to go to the movie with me?
Sandra : Of course. I’d love to.
Robi : I’ll pick you up a quarter after I finished playing futsal at 07.30. Be ready.
Sandra : Ok.

f. Satisfy/dissatisfy

Mr. Andi : Good morning, Mrs Mutia. Welcome to Bandung. I’m Andi. I’m your guide in Bandung.
Mrs. Mutia : Good morning, Mr. Andi. Thank you.
Mr. Andi : How was your trip from Semarang to Bandung?
Mrs. Mutia : It was nice. But I had a problem.
Mr. Andi : What happened? Any trouble on the train?
Mrs. Mutia : No. But I was dissatisfied with the service because the departure was not on time.
Mr. Andi : Oh, that’s so unpleasant.

g. Agreement/disagreement

Tomi : Our class is so dirty and trash is everywhere. We won’t feel pleasant when we’re learning.
Rian : Why don’t we sweep the floor and clean the class?
Tomi : Who wouldn’t?
Rian : Ok, let’s do it.

h. Asking/offering help

Waiter : Good morning. May I help you, ma’am?
Mrs. Ita : Good morning. Sure, I need a dress with a beautiful colour.
Waiter : Over there, ma’am. Let me show you.
Mrs. Ita : I’m interested in the gold one.
Waiter : This one?
Mrs. Ita : Yeah, I’ll buy this one.

i. Like/Dislike

Giving Greeting (Memberikan Sapaan)
* Good afternoon (from midday or lunch time to about 6 p.m or sunset) (dari tengah hari atau waktu makan siang hingga sekitar jam 6 sore atau matahari terbenam)
* Good morning (from midnight to noon, it can be used by informal but just “morning”) (dari tengah malam hingga siang hari, itu bisa digunakan secara informal tetapi hanya “morning”)
* Good evening ( day between afternoon and bedtime) (hari antara setelah siang hari hingga waktu tidur)
* Good night ( darkness between sunset and sunrise, it often can be used for the separation part at night) (kegelapan antara matahari terbenam dan matahari terbit, itu seringkali bisa digunakan untuk bagian perpisahan pada malam hari)
